The Engagement Day

8 October 2003

In the morning of the big day the council of state and queen Margrethe II officially approved the crownprince's engagement. Afterwards the state council greeted Mary Donaldson, her father John Donaldson and stepmother Susan Moody. All of this took place at Christian IX's palae at Amalienborg.

The wedding date, Friday 14 May 2004 was anounced and the fact that Mary had agreed to become a member of the Evangelical-Lutheran church and to apply for Danish citizenship, giving up her British and Australian citizenship.

At noon the engaged couple (and their parents) came out on the balcony of Christian IX's palae to greet the crowds.

Mary's shoes were by Valentino.
Her dress and coat were designed by Kenth Fredin.
She carried a Prada purse.
Her aquamarine earrings were by Marianne Dulong.

Then they were driven from Amalienborg to Fredensborg palace, where they had lunch with queen Margrethe, prince Henrik, prince Joachim and princess Alexandra.

At 15:30 the couple came to the Garden Hall at Fredensborg palace to give an interview.

Mary was the first to speak. She said in Danish that unfortunately her Danish wasn't as fluent as the newspapers had written, and that she would be answering in English.

Her engagement ring was made by jeweller Mauricio Monteiro in Brazil. Frederik designed it with help of the jeweller. It consists of a square cut diamond set with two square cut rubies on each side, symbolizing the colours of the flag of Denmark (the Dannebrog). The ring itself is white gold.

At 20:00 a dinner was hosted at Fredensborg for the members of parliament, the political parties and the representatives of Greenland and the Færøe Islands.

New official photos were taken by Eric Travers.

Mary's pearl necklace was a gift from prince Henrik.
Her gown was designed by Kenth Fredin.
