Romanian State Visit

16 March 2004

Romanian president Ion Iliescu paid a two day state visit to Denmark.

Mary was at the gala dinner hosted by queen Margrethe at Amalienborg.

Mary's dress was designed by Henrik Hviid. The fabric was bought at Salamanca market in Hobart, Tasmania - as was shown in the documentary "Mary Elizabeth Donaldson" aired shortly before the wedding.

Her new pearl and aquamarine choker is a present from Frederik.

I think that this is the moment that we can start to see Mary changing into o real princess. The dress, the hair, the posture...they are different from how they wore a few months back.

In the morning of the big day the council of state and queen Margrethe II officially approved the crownprince's engagement. Afterwards the state council greeted Mary Donaldson, her father John Donaldson and stepmother Susan Moody. All of this took place at Christian IX's palae at Amalienborg.

The wedding date, Friday 14 May 2004 was anounced and the fact that Mary had agreed to become a member of the Evangelical-Lutheran church and to apply for Danish citizenship, giving up her British and Australian citizenship.

At noon the engaged couple (and their parents) came out on the balcony of Christian IX's palae to greet the crowds.

Mary was the first to speak. She said in Danish that unfortunately her Danish wasn't as fluent as the newspapers had written, and that she would be answering in English.

Her engagement ring was made by jeweller Mauricio Monteiro in Brazil. Frederik designed it with help of the jeweller. It consists of a square cut diamond set with two square cut rubies on each side, symbolizing the colours of the flag of Denmark (the Dannebrog). The ring itself is white gold.

At 20:00 a dinner was hosted at Fredensborg for the members of parliament, the political parties and the representatives of Greenland and the Færøe Islands.
